DiscoverOurTown joins Verve Wireless to put LOCAL information in your pocket!
A new study has shown that people who are traveling want to access good reliable information and
content on lodging, dining and exploring a town’s unique sites to see more than anything else – but they want it on their cell phones.
Why not? Your mobile phone is the one device – outside your car keys and wallet – that you take with you everywhere. It’s easier than lugging around books, or laptops. And recently, it’s proven to be a reliable connection to the Internet and a great way to research a town or inn before visiting.
The folks at www.DiscoverOurTown.com saw this coming and last fall joined up with Verve Wireless, the nation’s leading mobile solutions provider to local publishers, to make sure that their nationwide storehouse of travel information, restaurants, area attractions and restaurant listings was easily available to everyone on their cell phones.
The process is simple: go to the www.DiscoverOurTown.com main website and click on the mobile phone icon. Then enter your phone number and immediately you’ll receive a link on your phone to DOT’s mobile site. Bookmark it so you can take it with you and you’ll find it’s just as easy using the regular Internet.
If you find yourself traveling through historic Wellsboro, Pa. you’ll find a feast of locally operated bed and breakfasts, famous mansions, and wonderful dining sites. Once you find something you like you just click on the number and get connected. Looking for weather, news, and entertainment options? It’s all there in your pocket.
As many of you know, with its in-depth local information on 2,000 towns, DOT has become one of
the most popular sites on the Internet. Each day, roughly 50,000 people access DOT’s trusted listings because they know that the information is accurate and thorough. Plus, there’s no searching through thousands of web listings to, say, find a good BBQ place if you’re in Tarboro, N.C. DOT can take you there regardless of whether you have your computer or not.
The staff at Discover Our Town is working hard to make sure that your internet and mobile search is vivid. They’re working with innkeepers and restaurants to upload thousands of images and colorful content onto the DOT sites. And with cell phones becoming more like computers, they’ll have no trouble displaying the content. Think of the iPhone, the popular device from Apple. It’s leading a trend within the handset industry to make themselves every bit as visually
compelling as the most powerful PC.
Also: most of the cellular networks are now offering faster wireless content speeds. Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile that allow cell phone users to download are able to download text and images at near broadband speeds. AT&T is the latest to expand their broadband network to 275 metro areas, and will have 350 urban markets covered by year-end. Shortly even towns like Wellsboro will have high-speed connectivity.
All this has prompted DOT’s loyal users to pickup their phones when searching for information. The mobile service, started last December, has seen its mobile usage nearly double in each of the last three months.
Says DOT’s co-founder CH Wilson: “We know people don’t always have a computer nearby to access Discover Our Town’s website. This is a terrific way for us to stay connected to our customers.”
So stay connected wherever you are. It’s all in your pocket.

The Bentwood Inn Joins Innkeeping Association: Select Registry
The Bentwood Inn was recently honored by admittance into Select Registry, Distinguished Inns of North America, the premier innkeeping association in the United States and Canada. Member inns must meet the rigorous standards of a Quality Assurance program, and represent the most prestigious establishments of their type.Out of the thousands of inns in North America, only an elite few are invited to join Select Registry each year. The Bentwood Inn has now joined with more than 400 other exceptional properties that are already members of the Association.
Ontario’s Finest Inns and the American Heart Association to name a few — to promote its members to target audiences. Its celebrated guidebook, now in its 20th Edition, is distributed each year to nearly 400,000 guests throughout North America. The organization also maintains a critically-acclaimed website, supervises gift certificate and loyalty programs, and organizes promotions for its members, including last year’s inaugural “Inn-credible Breakfast Cook-off,” a breakfast recipe culinary competition that produced nearly 30 million media impressions.
The Bentwood Inn exemplifies the high quality and service championed by this Association,” says Select Registry Executive Director Keith Kehlbeck. “Select Registry assures the traveler that each of its inns is regularly inspected—anonymously and with an overnight inspection that measures the quality of hospitality, as well as the physical plant. Our members share a high standard of excellence, and each of our country inns, luxury B&Bs, and unique small hotels has its own distinctive character.” The Bentwood Inn is proud to belong to this prestigious association.

July Birthstone Revealed in All its Glory
July babies have always loved their precious red stone, but did you know these interesting facts about the great king of gems?
- Indian legends say that the ruby was born from the blood of a demon, wild, fiery, passionate and dangerous.
- Rubies in Myanmar (formerly known as Burma) are thought to confer invulnerability - by inserting the stone into the flesh until it becomes a part of its owner's body. Those who wear rubies in this way are believed to be incapable of being wounded by spear, sword or gun.
- Ground into a powder and placed on the tongue, ruby was thought to cure blood diseases.
- An owner of a ruby set in any jewelry and worn as a talisman on the left side in 14th Century Europe was assured a long, peaceful, happy life, and that his home, fruit-trees and vineyards would be safe from injury or weather!
- Ruby is one of the twelve stones worn on the breastplate of the High Priest in Ancient Jerusalem.
