Whale & Ale front sign

Wine flights, Tuesdays, - April 7, 14 21, 28
Every Tuesday night, the Whale & Ale, (San Pedro's British Restaurant), offers a whole evening of wine flights.
Guest are poured 4 tastes of white wines for $8, and/or 4 tastes of red for $10.
Tuesday times are 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

April's selections:

White
Adler Fels Russian River Sauvignon Blanc 2005
floral aromas that are balanced with notes of gooseberry, grapefruit & citrus peel. The palate is juicy with ripe pineapple flavors & the finish exhibits a slight mineral character & subtle lime notes.
Purité Un-oaked Viognier 2006 Santa Barbara County
The nose: hints of honeydew melon, pineapple, lichee nut, cardamom & honeysuckle while the palate’s flavors consist of pink grapefruit, honeysuckle, apricot, white peach, citrus & passion fruit. The low acidity in the wine leaves a soft finish which is another highlight of the delicate nature of this grape.
Canyon Road Chardonnay 2007, California
Medium- bodied Chardonnay, with notes of crisp apple, ripe citrus fruit & a hint of cinnamon spice.
 Red
Pepperwood Grove Pinot Noir, 2007 Valle Central, Chile
flavors of cherry, rose water, plum, clove, strawberry & “earthy tones”.
Firestone Merlot 2005, Santa Ynez Valley
aged in French oak barrels for 21 months, complex aromas of cherry, mocha & nutmeg spice. The palate is round & soft, with supple flavors of black cherry, plum & vanilla that unfold into a long, balanced finish.
Pedroncelli Dry Creek Valley Syrah, 2003, Sonoma County
aged 18 months in American & Hungarian oak barrels, - it's a deep inky purple in the glass. Rich aromas of ripe berry & black pepper spice; concentrated flavors of blackberry, currants & green tea highlight this Syrah with well balanced tannins providing structure.

This March, Go From Blue To Green!Soothing Green Jade and Sterling Silver Earrings
Introducing the Mystical Birthstone for March: JADE

Ever felt like you didn't really like your birthstone? Suspect that birthstones are just something American Commercialism invented? We know how you feel! The truth is, the 'official' birthstone list from the American National Association of Jewelers was adopted in 1912 - and we KNOW many of these traditions predate that list. So we've done a little research into ALTERNATE birthstones, and here's what we found for March.

A Mystical Birthstone list dating back well over a thousand years to Tibetan origin offers stones meant to help one overcome the obstacles of their birth month. For March babies, your stone is JADE. In prehistoric times, Jade was valued for its toughness and used to craft weapons. As early as 3000 B.C. Jade was valued in China as the 'royal gem'. The stone embodies the Confucian virtues of wisdom, justice, compassion, modesty and courage. This stone has also been used to represent the female-erotic! Jade has a history in ancient Egypt as the stone of love, inner peace, harmony and balance. In parts of Asia its known as lucky or protective. Jade strengthens the body, promotes wisdom and ensures a long life. For more Jade Jewelry at TradewindsVT.com type 'Jade' in the search box online!

    Ice Trilliant
Aquamarine Stud Earrings in 18k GoldPrefer your traditional sparkling Aquamarine? Mined mostly in Brazil, these stunning stones can range from blue-green to teal to pure blue. Folklore calls Aquamarine a healing stone, supposedly helpful in reducing the effects of poisons. Sailors kept this gemstone to prevent seasickness and keep them safe. Aquamarine is believed to endow the wearer with foresight, courage and happiness, to increase intelligence, and make one youthful. A perfect stone to ward off the winter blues!

David and Diana Travel OnMorvi, India
Tiruvannamalai, Chennai, Mamallapuram - Wherever Will They Go Next?

If you've been following the adventures of David and Diana, they're still vacationing in India. We heard from them in late February. They've visited little towns, sprawling cities, soaring towers and massive temple complexes. Diana wrote on February 23rd, "We are going to attend the Shiva Ratri festival at the temple tonight. It will be quite an exciting festival, although probably not as crazy as it is on Nepal. We already were at the temple earlier today - it's really a massive temple complex, with soaring towers over 200 ft tall. Tonight the edges of the buildings will be lit by thousands of little oil lamps, all carefully placed in decorative patterns. This afternoon, they had music and drumming and a temple elephant who would accept rupee coins from pilgrims, and then, in return, bless each one by brushing their bowed head with her trunk. I watched her scoop up many many coins, and hold them all in her trunk. It was a very charming scene."

We look forward to sharing more of David and Diana's adventures and insights with you! Keep watching the map for WHERE IN THE WORLD ARE DAVID AND DIANA? as Dave journeys off to the amber trade show in Gdansk, Poland, and Diana heads to Nepal in search of hot new styles to bring back JUST FOR YOU!

Hacienda del Desierto Bed & Breakfast of Tucson AZ

    How We Got Started

Food01 It would be so much more interesting if we could claim that the Hacienda was an old stage stop on the Spanish Trail, an old route to Mexico. The truth is somewhat less striking but a labor of love nonetheless.

Rooms_tn_casita Originally, Davids father bought about 200 acres in the 50s when Tucson stopped at Swan road. He later sold off all but 40 acres, leaving some acreage to each of his 4 children. In 1970, we moved to the property, living with our 3 children in just the west wing of the house. Over a period of 9 years David, his father, and several neighborhood bricklayers completed the house after school, weekends, and vacation periods as we both taught school. Of course, the children helped, and if you listen to their story, they did all the slave labor. We had an architect help with the initial building plan but did some revision as the building progressed. David has done a good deal of the work including the hand-adzing of porch beams, and Rosemary is the interior designer.

The beams are old electric poles and the ceiling boards were taken from the old St. Marys Sanatorium and an old Safeway store, both torn down in the late 60s and early 70s. The Patio Suite and Galleria wings were originally our childrens wing and later the Galleria housed Rosemarys mother for 5 years.

In 1981, David and our youngest son built the Casita, and our older son promptly moved in with his son and lived there for 10 years.

Rooms_tn_galleria In 1991, David applied for a license to operate a B & B after we stayed in a number of them in Great Britain. He didnt know at that time whether we would ever decide to operate one but wanted to apply before too many restrictions were developed. In 1993 we experimented with having guests stay without the breakfast to see whether our place was attractive to others and whether it was something we might seriously consider after teacher retirement.

Rooms_tn_patiosuite It wasnt until 1994 that we officially opened the B & B with only one remodeled guestroom, the Patio Suite. A year later we remodeled the space that is now La Rosa. We then remodeled the Casita (after our son moved). In 1999 we remodeled the Galleria after Rosemarys mother left. Since we want to maintain the present size, we will be adding no additional guest facilities.
